strymon starlab vs night sky

I have the NightSky and use it with my standalone synths. StarLab is a single module that will completely transform your modular rack. NightSky is a reverberant synthesis workstation, and a powerful, hands-on experimental sound design platform. This results in an astoundingly expressive and lifelike instrument with a unique voice all its own, which can be enhanced and expanded by the full range of StarLabs reverb capabilities.
It seems to be a bit less mid-coloured.

FEEDBACK Applies regeneration to the delay, resulting in more repeats with longer delays, or more resonance with shorter delays. The Big Sky pedal costs $479 and plenty of modular musicians use it as their reverb. NightSky gives you real-time continuous control of reverb pitch/processing rate/core size, harmonics, and even a synth-like resonant filter with multiple modulation waveshapes, plus a step sequencer with variable glide.

Use the dedicated FEEDBACK knob to add resonance and musical harmonic sweeps to flanger effects. The Filter can be switched between a simpler low/high damp and a 24dB/octave LPF, with variable resonance for the effected signal only. Shimmer level, reverb decay, delay feedback, and mod speed are under external CV control. experience. I whiled away the hours with Starlab being fed different left and right waveforms by a Pittsburgh Primary Oscillator (the fragments and timbre waveforms), triggered by a simple four-step sequence, with two extra LFOs from another module for some slow parameter movement.

WhenECHO ON is engaged, it becomes a dedicated delay effect by bussing the delay output to the WET output mix. The form factor is completely different between the two devices where NightSky is a three footswitch guitar pedal that comes with its own power supply, and StarLab is a 3U, 28hp Eurorack module that requires power from a Eurorack compatible power supply.
The first few seconds of the clip are the dry input.
Press and hold for 2 seconds for PITCH QUANTIZE mode where SIZE/PITCHvalues are restricted to the selected scale.

Strymon Starlab compared to Strymon Big Sky / Night Sky, Re: Strymon Starlab compared to Strymon Big Sky / Night Sky.
As a guitar pedal, NightSky is designed to receive both instrument and line level signals up to +8dBu or about 5.5Vpp (volts peak-to-peak). All Strymon products are Designed and Built in the USA. StarLab takes over from there, adding.

The best of Strymons shimmery, complex reverbs will find a home in primo Euro Rack setups everywhere.
+ Plenty of presets.
This Karplus-Strong patch shows thestring dynamics attainable by modulating the filter with the envelope waveform, while a fast external LFO is patched to the High Damp CV to provide a rapid motion at the top of the spectrum. Strymon, Starlab 679,95 inkl.

LOW PASS Changes the HIGH DAMP function to a 24dB/octave low pass filter applied at the output of the reverb.

But it's more than Big Sky, capable of many more things in far more controllable ways.
Delay time is synced to sequence, with the clock divider giving dotted-eight repeats. No external triggering here, just the Karplus string, This Karplus-Strong patch shows thestring dynamics attainable by modulating the filter with the envelope waveform, while a fast external LFO is patched to the High Damp CV to provide a rapid, motion at the top of the spectrum. Heres how some simple drums sound through the Karplus mode used as resonators with short decay and no high damping. Delay modulates the delay time.
People seem to be really hard on the Night Sky; a few people have said they found it . Effect is off whenSHIMMER knob is fully counterclockwise.

Activate the 24dB/oct low pass filter for classic filter mod effects, or achieve more subtle filter modulation of the reverbs HIGH DAMP. Location: Berkeley, CA.

SHAPE Selects from six different waveshapes for the LFO, including triangle, square, ramp, saw, random, and envelope which responds to input dynamics with the input sensitivity set by the DEPTH knob.

The difference here is that while you can modulate the delay lines within the reverb structure on NightSky, StarLab allows you to modulate theDELAY/TUNE control affecting the delay time or the pitch of the string in Karplus-Strong mode.
Lotsa modules for sale/trade- check it out!
With a button press and knob turn in the delay section, Karplus/Strong mode is activated. Dense is a plate-like reverb with a fastresponse and dense reflections that canventure into ambient territory at highdecay times. All other audio is StarLab only. Strymon BigSky vs Strymon Nightsky - Other gear used - Friedman Partscaster, Friedman BE-50 Deluxe, Friedman 2x12 w/V30s mic'd up with SM57s.Strymon NIGHTSKY.
In Karplus-Strong mode, this control reduces the low frequency content of the string. Send the LFO signal to modulate the SIZE / PITCH (process rate) of the reverb core for effects ranging from mild to wild and even on to music-generating: In Quantize mode, signal from the LFO will be quantized to any of 15 different scales as it modulates the SIZE / PITCH parameter.
Enhance signals with gorgeous chorus, flanging, and modulated delays. A side effect of this was the tendency of the reverbs to have a slowly building envelope that "bloomed," resulting in big ambient reverbs that sit nicely with the dry signal even at high Mix levels. The. The results of these parameter changes vary based on the Texture type selected (the three reverb algorithms as described above). It's a totally different beast.

of course, the night sky is more pricey so that might be taken into .
External CVs modulate Shimmer level (set to +5th interval), Glimmer level, and filter cutoff, and also create varying chorus and vibrato effects as the LFO speed varies.
An, Arturia KeyStep in Arpeggiator mode drives the string tuning while triggering the drum inputs that, excite the string. .
Anyone can sell on Reverb.
Pitch CV is providing tuning. Mutable Instruments Rings and Noise Engineering BIA modules provide the input to StarLab. Enhance signals with gorgeous chorus, flanging, and modulated delays. Is that enough for you?.
SIZE/PITCH knob acts as offset. The Strymon NightSky is one of the most impressive pedals I've played yet, its capable of sounds that are unlike anything else I have.

LOW DAMP Removes low end content both at the output and in the regenerating core portion of the reverb.

When in Karplus-Strong mode, continuously excites or bows the string.
LFO Speed and Depth tweaks. In Karplus-Strong mode, modulating the HIGH DAMP parameter creates lifelike dynamic string damping. are mixed separately and do not pass through StarLab.
They moved from SHARC to ARM. Some onboard delay modulation is added for more motion. In addition you can get delay repeats with the predelay. The first external LFO controlling the speed of the internal LFO, and the second controlling Shimmer depth quite heavenly!

INTERVAL CV Sets pitch interval for shimmer.

Press the TAP/TRIG button to pluck the string, or hold the TAP/TRIG button to bow the string. reverb to fade out. There's not much point in arguing about taste.

The Dense reverb decay is turned up to build the sound, passing through the filter. This clip demonstrates StarLab in Karplus mode using the envelope LFO shape to modulate its 4-pole low pass filter, opening the filter on the excitation of the string (triggered by external Tap/Trig CV sequence clock) and then quickly closing. Shimmer offers up to an octave above and below the original input (set in intervals with a button hold and knob turn), and has a Regen button, which gives more of a feedback build in the wet signal; while using Glimmers High Band button emphasises the upper frequencies to the point of harshness.
You're going to want to watch a lot of demo vids and read reviews of ease of use and see if what it's purpose is suits your actual musical needs.

FEEDBACK CV Affects delay feedback or Karplus-Strong string decay/resonance.

An Arturia KeyStep in Arpeggiator mode drives the string tuning while triggering the drum inputs that excite the string. Then the Dry knob is set to minimum and we hear only the, reverberated output with StarLabs LFO modulating its 4-pole resonant low pass after the reverb. The seemingly simple idea of allowing the pre-delay signal to be fed directly to the modules output led to the development of rich sounding delay, chorus, and flanger effects, all of which can be used together with or independent of the reverb.

ECHO ON Busses the delay output to the WET output to mix with the reverb signal. The Harmonics section, with its Shimmer and Glimmer controls, offers pitch shifting (Shimmer) and harmonic modulation (Glimmer) to further enhance movement of the reverb environment and create more ghostly tones.

While experimenting with short delay times using feedback and filtering, we began finding very musical and expressive Karplus-Strong string synthesis sounds, and realized that StarLab could move beyond signal processing and become a truly unique voice module as well. The Dense reverb texture is an immediate-response reverb with a smooth sound field, featuring sonic characteristics similar to a plate. Unlike fuzz or distortion, where you can very nearly run a patch through a dirty sock and get something cool and usable out of it, digital reverb is not something that one with little or no experience in creating it can just stumble into successfully.
Mutable Instruments Rings and Noise Engineering BIA modules provide the input to StarLab. Knob position acts as an offset.

Shimmer level, reverb decay, delay feedback, and mod speed are under external CV control. Official Company Forums - Proudly Hosted at ModWiggler's!
A very quick turn of the Decay knob feeds a slow, pitch-modulated delay into the reverb and were suddenly floating away in a dreamy haze. Not sure how Valhalla would do the Strymon Cloud reverb I like so much.
External CVs control the Infinite function, Shimmer level, LFO depth, and delay feedback to create a variety of textures that weave in and out. Use for mono input.
